ANNIE LAURIE'S HOME
UP FOR LEASE FOR FIRST TIME IN ITS HISTORY. London, March 5. Home of Annie Laurie, heroine of the famous Scottish song, the estate of Maxwelton, Dumfriesshire, has been offered on lease,- for the first time in its history. It has been in the family of the present owner, Lieutenant-Colonel Sir John Laurie, since 1611. Annie Laurie was the daughter of the first baronet, Sir Robert Laurie. Born in Maxwelton in 1682, she was betrothed to William Douglas, of Fingland, Kirkcudbright, the author of the song. She broke the engagement, and in 1717 married Alexander Ferguson, of Craigdarrock. Douglas wrote his love song to her, but shortly afterward he made a runaway marriage with a Galloway girl. A portrait of Annie Laurie hangs in the banqueting hall of Maxwelton.
