HITLERS ACHIEVEMENTS

Adolph. Hitler is' of humble origin and entirely self-made, writes Mr. J. L. Garvin, in the London Observer. Four years ago, at the age of 43, he became Imperial Chancellor and more. He rose not only to Bismarck’s seat, but higher. Without crown or purple, in a plainer suit than Cromwell’s, this man of the people surpassed the Hohenzollerns; and acquired within the Third Reich not only more power than the Iron Chancellor had ever wielded, but a far more complete and authoritative sovereignty than the Emperors had possessed. At his accession he asked confidence for a first term of four years. That term has now passed. Whatever may be disputed in the record—or disfiguring in the sight of British eyes—the main work built up is massive and towering. It stands square to all winds. No man, in the same short period, ever has restored the strength and spirit of a great people by a more transforming and formidable change.
