P.W.D. CARTING

APPLICATIONS DEALT WITH. ATTITUDE OF AUTHORITY. A carrier “got his own back” on a lawyer at the sitting of the Licensing Authority in Te Kuiti last week.. M. Beros wanted to have the right to cart for the Public Works Department and local bodies in both the Waitomo and Otorohanga Counties. It was plain sailing for him as far as the Waitomo County was concerned, but though the Otorohanga Carriers' Association was agreeable to his being granted a license for the cartage of public works materials in their area as public works operations were transitory, it was felt that there were plenty of carriers to cater for local bodies. This was explained by the solicitor for the Association. Beros was accordingly granted the right to cart only public works materials within the Otorohanga County, but in giving the decision the Authority, Mr Phelan, remarked, “and perhaps you might get a little extra by getting on the soft side of the solicitor." Beros grinned broadly. “I don’t think he’s got a soft side," he said, amid the laughter of all present. Both the Te Kuiti and Otorohanga Carriers’ objected to new licenses for the cartage of local body materials, and as a result of their objection L. N. Standish, of Te Rau-a-moa, who did not appear, was granted the right to cart for the Public Works Department only. Objections were raised to the application of A. J. Jonson, of Frankton, to cart for either public works or local bodies in this district. Mr Dennison pointed out that price cutting would result if outside carriers were permitted to come into this district when things were slack in their own, but the applicant did not appear to support his application and it was declined.
