WORKING LONG HOURS

CARTING TO KAWHIA SOUTH. TRANSPORT AUTHORITY’S WARNING. “I am satisfied that some of the operators have been working long hours and on Sundays. It is impossible for any man working reasonable hours to compete with these men, and I. cannot speak too strongly against the practice, which is directly opposed to the views of the Minister and the intent of the legislature.” These remarks were made by Mr Phelan, the No. 1 District Transport Authority, at the close of the sitting at Te Kuiti, as he reserved decision in the case in which V. A. Vicary, of Kiritehere, applied for the right to take goods over the Caves Road. The working of long hours had also been suggested in this and other cases, though it was either denied or the reasons for it advanced. Objections were raised to the granting of Vicary's license by Phillips and F. Fitzgibbon, who each held two vehicle authorities and covered the route. They contended that there was no room for a third operator—one had recently been working in their district but had been forced out. The parties were unable to come to a decision in a conference—it was suggested that Vicary should cart over the Ngapaenga route from Kiritehere, but this was not favoured by the applicant. F. Goddard and S. N. Vicary gave evidence, along with the applicant, in support of the application, and Phil lips and Fitzgibbon against it. Mr Phelan said he was not satisfied with the evidence produced; it seem ed possible that the carriers were working long hours. He reserved his decision to consider the evidence and make further enquiries.
