INFANTILE PARALYSIS

TWENTY PATIENTS IN WAIKATO. SCHOOLS CLOSED. Inquiry from the health officer at Hamilton this morning elicited the information that no fresh cases of infantile paralysis had occurred in the Te Awamutu or Otorohanga districts. In the course of a statement last night, Dr M. M. Hocken, medical superintendent ot the Waikato Hospital, said that there were T 7 cases in that hospital, two adults and 15 children. The oldest patient was 25 years of age and the youngest was a baby of eight months. There would be little crippling of the patients, if any at all. Three further.cases were admitted to the Waikato Hospital yesterday, a girl aged five from Whitikahu, near Taupiri, a Maori boy aged five months from Te Mata, and a girl aged ten from Horsham Downs. The first case has been diagnosed as not positive and the others positive. Those affected in the Waikato district now number 20.

The following schools, among others in tlie Waikato, have been closed by order of the Health Department: Otorohanga County; Te Rau-a-moa, Honikiwi, Kio Kio, Maihiihi, Ngahape, Ngutunui, Otewa, Otorohanga, Paewhenua, Rangitahi, Tokanui, Wharepuhunga, Arohena, Kawa West, Te Kawa, Whawharua, Pukeatua.

Waipa County: Parawera, Ellicott’s Block, Kaipaki, Kakepuku, Kihikihi, Korakonui, Leamington, Mangapiko, Ngahinepouri, Ohaupo, Owairaka Valley, Paterangi, Pirongia, Puahue, Rotongata, Rangiaohia, Roto-o-rangi, Te Awamutu, Te Mawhai, Te Rahu, Te Rore, Waikeria, Wharepapa, Rukuhia. Matamata County: Arapuni, Horahora, Karapiro.
