SKATING CARNIVAL

INTERESTING EXHIBITIONS. There was a large attendance at the Town Hall skating rink last Saturday evening for the carnival promoted by Mr Sheehy, and the fun was fast and the exhibitions interesting. The number of patrons in fancy costume, however, was not up to expectations, those who did compete being neatly attired. Award were as follows: Most original pair, Miss F. Bowden and Mr C. Whitehouse, “The Barber’s Shop”; Best dressed lady. Miss George, Chinese lady; best dressed man. Mr F. Battson, Mexican matador; most graceful couple, Miss Smith and Mr C. Lewis; Monte Carlo, Miss Spinetto and Mr A. Riley; most graceful gliders, Miss Smith and Mr Lewis. Tlie two last named also won a waltzing competition. Mr Sheehy and Miss Sheehy gave a very attractive and clever exhibition ot waltzing, including a neat stepover movement, and their perfect timing and grace was warmly applauded. Miss Sheehy also gave a solo exhibition including in her repertoire reversing, pirouetting, weaving, crisscross, and one foot skating. She proved herself exceedingly clever in negotiating a row ot lighted candles placed on the floor, and when the applause had subsided the demonstrator showed how to spiral skate. A men’s half-mile skating championship attracted many entrants, and the winners of heats were: J. Simmonds, J. Smith, K. Walker and J. Fletcher. In the semi-finals Smith beat Simmonds, and Walker eliminated Fletcher. The final was won by Smith after a keen contest. The ladies’ motor tyre race, 220 yards, ended: Miss George 1, Miss Kerr 2.
