EXPORT OF SHEEP
SHIPMENT FOR ARGENTINE AND CHILE. EXTENSIVE TRADE BEING DEVELOPED. The extensive trade that is being developed with South America in New Zealand sheep, and particularly Corliedales, is again evidenced by the tact that Wrignt Stephenson and Co., Ltd., will ship this week the fourth consignment of New Zealand sheep to that market this year, reports “Cultivtator” in the Dominion. Inclusive of the sheeip going next week the total exported by this firm to South American States this year will be 258 head, the value of which would be approximately 15/000 guineas. When insurance, freight and other charges are added, it can be readily appreciated what amount of South American capital is invested in securing New Zealand sheep. The shipment just arranged comprises 40 Corriedales and one stud Ryeland ram. The Ryeland was specially selected by. Mr A. A. Cameron, Buenos Aireis, from the Milford flock of Mr J. F. Havhurst, Temuka, and is the first ram of this breed ever to be sent from this Dominion to South America. Mr Cameron, who was formerly general-manager of the Exploitadora Sheepbreeding Company at Magallanes, was the first man to introduce Corriedales to South America, and on his retirement from the management of the company their flocks had increased to 11 million, and the average clip of the total flocks was 91b a hdad. In addition to this Ryeland ram, Mr Cameron, who is now spending a holiday in New Zealand, and who was a visitor to this year’s Royal Show, intends taking back to Buenos Aires with him Southdowns and Corriedales. These, which will comprise ewes and lambs, will not be shipped until June, 1937. They are to form an addition to the studs at present maintained bv Mr Cameron on his stud farm near Buenos Aires. The Corriedales in the shipment this wedk are destined for Tierra del Fuego, Argentine, and Magallanes, Chile. The consignment for the Argentine includes 12 stud ram hoggets and 20 stud ewe hoggets from the Bushey Park Estate, Palmerston South., a special stud ram hogget from the Estate of H. T. Little, “Hui Hui,” North Canterbury, an out-stand-ing three-year-old prize-winning ram bred by Mr Hugh Ensor, Rakahuri, Rangiora, and a prize-winning fourtooth bred by Mr C. H. S. Johnston, “Bonnyrigg,” St Andrews. This latter animal from Mr Johnson’s stud was first-prize four-tooth and reserve chamnion at the Timaru Show this year, and at the Royal Show, and headed the breeders’ group comprising the sire and two of his progeny —a ram and ewe hogget. The sheep for Chile are four special stud ram hoggets selected from the Bushey Park Estate, one of which was first and champion at both ths Waimate and Oamaru shows this year, and also a prize-winner at the Royal fixture.
