RAMS FOR URUGUAY
SHIPMENT OF CORRIEDALES ARRANGED. After a thorough inspection of all the Corriedalo rams exhibited at this year’s Royal Show at Christchurch four high-class animals were finally selected for shipment to Uruguay, where they will join the other New Zealand-bred animals in the stud of Dr A. C. Callinal Heber, a prominent South American pastoralist. When Dr Heber visited this Dominion about 12 months ago he purchased a number of Corridlale sheep, and subsequently in a letter to agents acting on his behalf in this country expressed distinct satisfaction with the sheep. The four animals now chosen for export are all from the Riversleigh stud of Mr James Reid, Canterbury. They will be shipped to M'ontevido by the Pakeha, which is scheduled to leave the New Zealand coast on December 12. In giving his instructions to the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., for the purchase of rams Dr Heber specified that any animals bought on his behalf must be sheep of the highest quality with exceptionally good heads and correct colouring, well covered on the points and carrying fleeces of medium wool, as the Society of Corriedale Breeders in Uruguay would not admit inferior sheep to their registered flocks. The ,<tud rams selected comprise one woolly four-tooth, one shorn fourtooth and two woolly hoggets, all of which conform in every way to the exacting specifications. The two hoggets, RIO and R 5. are both from the same family, and are
particularly attractive animals, beingprizewinners at the Royal Show in the section for pens of five hoggets. The woolly four-tooth, D 3, sired by an “Hui Hui” ram, is an extremely short-legged sheep with width and depth in the body and covered with an even medium-strength fleece. The shorn four-tooth, which is closely related to the two hogg-ets in the consignment, is another first-class ram, showing- true Corriedale- characteristics. This is the fourth consignment made by the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., to “Estancia Mlone-on Heber,” where Dr Heber has established a large stud of New Zealand type Corriedales, which are in strong- demand throughout Uruguay.
