ENTERTAINMENTS

AT THE REGENT. AGAIN TO-NIGHT. “STREET SINGER’S SERENADE.” “ Street Singer’s Serenade,” now at -the Regent Theatre, one of the first of the eagerly-awaited 1936 “ World Standard ” productions for release in Australia and New Zealand by Associated Distributors, is sparkling, delightful entertainment, based on the real-life stories of its two world-po-pular co-stars, Anna Neagle, whose rise to the starring heights began as a chorus girl, and Arthur Tracy, the original “ Street Singer,” whose sensational climb to fame is one of the greatest romances of the entertainment world. Lavishly and spectacularly produced to the merry rhythm of irresistible song and dance hits, “ Street Singer’s Serenade ” has been acclaimed overseas as “ The Happiness Picture of 1936.” The story will bring home to picture patrons the thrill and the glamour of London’s West End, as intimately as American films have done with Broadway. Not only have the stage scenes been shot in the historic Lyceum Theatre, but they have been filmed with the Hippodrome chorus under Ralph Reader, playing in his real-life role of dance director, and with Frank Boor, the Hippodrome manager, appearing in his own capacity, in addition to a number of other West End celebrities. TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY. “SHE COULDN’T TAKE IT.” Joan Bennett is always a draw at any picture theatre, for she has a tremendous “fan” list. The management of the local Regent Theatre has therefore displayed commendable enterprise in securing her popular picture, “She Couldn’t Take It,” for screening on Tuesday and Wednesday evening. With Joan Bennett are George Raft, Alan Mowbray and Walter Connolly in important parts, and the whole production bristles with comedy, nicely blended with excitement and action, and a climax tljat in some respects is astonishing, but altogether satisfying. There is also a remarkably well-chosen list of featurettes in support.
