SOCIAL AND PERSONAL

Messrs Senia Chostiakoff and Vincent Ryan arrived in Te Awamutu to-day in continuation of their popular and triumphant tour of New Zealand. The engagement is announced between Mary, only daughter of Mr and Mrs H. Morris, Maihiihi, and Cecil Gordon, only son of Mr and Mrs J. H. Jones, Ngahape. The Hon. H. T. Armstrong, Minister of Labour, is to visit Cambridge this evening to confer with the farmers on the problems confronting them, especially concerning the shortage of farm labour.

The death is announced from Auckland of Mr John Schischka, prominent merchant there for many years and managing director of Wallace Supplies Ltd., which has a very prosperous branch in Te Awamutu. Mr Pat Goulsbro, the well-known Auckland racing specialist, is in Te Awamutu to assist in preparation for the W'aipa Racing Club’s summer meeting next week. The Minister of Labour,-Hon. H. T. Armstrong, was accompanied in his visit to Te Awamutu yesterday by Mr C. A. Barrell, M.P. for Hamilton, and Mr S. N. Ziman, president of the Waikato sub-provincial executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Mesdames F. J. B. Ryburn, of Paterangi, and C. North, of Ohaupo Road, represented the Waikato Federation of the Women’s Division at the Farmers’ Union conference with the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, Minister of Labour, at Te Awamutu, yesterday afternoon. Dean Weatherhog, of St. Peter’s, Harnilton, and Mrs Weatherhog were visitors to Te Awamutu on Wednesday evening to attend the welcome social accorded by the parishioners of St. John’s Church to the newly-in-ducted vicar, Rev. Martin Sullivan, and Mrs Sullivan. About twenty members of the local Lodge of Oddfellows journeyed to Hamilton last evening for the halfyearly installation of officers of Loyal Hamilton Lodge. Bro. Eade, District Grandmaster, officiated as installing officer. During the evening a presentation from No. 9 Group (of which Te Awamutu Lodge is one) made a presentation of a Westminster chiming clock to Bro. F. Best, past group officer, in appreciation of his splendid services to the Order. We learn ■ that the Hon. W. Lee Martin, Minister of Agriculture, who was expected to accompany the Minister of Labour to Te Awamutu, is indisposed, and has had to cancel all public engagements for a few days. This will preclude his officiating at the opening of the Ohaupo Bowling Club’s green to-morrow afternoon and meeting the Waikato sub-provincial Farmers’ Union executive at Hamilton and the meeting at Cambridge this evening.
