The portraits of the King on Jap-anese-made coronation mugs, as well as the quality of the goods themselves, have aroused the indignation of a leading Christchurch business man who was approached recently with a suggestion that he should stock these mugs for sale in the coronation year. On one mug the King is made to appear ‘sinister and Oriental, and the fact that the portrait is meant to represent him can only be gathered from the device on his military cap. On the other the portrait is recognisable, but under it appears the legend, “King Edward VIII. made in Japan.”
