WORK FOR 400 MEN
DUPLICATING AUCKLAND TO FRANKTON RAILWAY. The completion of thei railway line duplication between Auckland and Frankton will provide work for about 400 men. The decision to finish the duplication was announced recently, and preliminary work was begun on Monday at Ngaruawa.hia by 40 men. It is stated that 150 men will be placed on the. job within the next week or two, and 250 more would be given work after Christmas, thus implementing further the Government’s policy of finding employment for the unemployed. The line is duplicated between Auckland and Papakura and between Frankton and Horotiu, a. further 56 miles remaining to be done. When the -roiect is completed the keeping of time-tables will bei greatly facilitated, while the additional line is urgently needed to cope with the greatly increased railway traffic. The Railway Department has been particularly anxious to proceed with the project. The work will be done in sections, and it is intended to duplicate first parts of the line on which there will be the greatest volume of traffic. It will probably be several years before the duplication of the whole line is completed. The men will be employed on the terms of the agreement between the Public Works Department and the New Zealand Workers’ Union.
