SOCIAL AND PERSONAL

Miss Jean Batten is to make a personal appearance at Hamilton this afternoon, commencing a tour of the Dominion. It is expected she will be in Wellington from Friday to Monday. She is touring New Zealand under the auspices of the Amalgamated Theatres, Ltd.

The death occurred (rather suddenly) at his home in Auckland, on Friday night, of Mr Samuel T. Rossiter, fatheir of Mrs W. F. Woodward and Mr Norman Rossiter, of Te Awamutu. Deceased, who was 76 years of age, was born in Canterbury, and had resided in and around Auckland for about half a century. He is survived by a widow, two sons and four daughters. The lata Mr Rossiter visited Te Awamutu from time to time, and was widely esteemed.

Mrs Douglas Cairns’ home, Te Rahu Road, was the scene of another farewell party for Miss Betty Lee, a popular young Cambridge lady, who is leaving shortly for Australia, on Saturday night. Progressive bridge was played, the guest of honour annexing the prize for the highest score. Great amusement resulted from a limerick competition, a time limit of ten minutes being imposed and the subject being the guest of honour. Mrs Cairns was wearing a frock of cigar brown crepe with elbow-length, draped sleeves, to receive her guests. Her sister, Miss Jessie Mackereth, wore peach pink waffle crepe. Miss Betty Lee had on a black skirt and tunic blouse of geranium-red metallasse.
