BUTTER EXPORTS

HIGHER SEPTEMBER OUTPUT. Exports of butter from New Zealand in September totalled 8686 tons over the quantity exported in September, 1935. The favourable spring is reflected in the good start the new season has made, and shipments for August and Septemer total 18,673 tons, an increase of 473 tons over last season’s corresponding output. Total shipments from New Zealand and Australia for September were 12,961 tons,- as against 12,896 tons in September, 1935. The largely-increased consumption of butter in the United Kingdom is emphasised by the big increase in imports during September in comparison with arrivals in that month in the previous two years. Last month Britain imported 18,504 tons of Empire butter, or 4854 tons more than m September, 1935, and 6908 tons more than in September, 1934. Foreign butters imported, in addition, totalled 25,057 tons, or 5215 tons more than in September, 1935, and 8543 tons more than in the same month of 1934. Russia in September of the last two years enjoyed a large increase, while last month supplies from the Netherlands and other unclassified countries registered a marked advance on shipments in September, 1935.

Stocks of all butters in London on Ist October were estimated at 26,600 tons, compared with 25,381 tons on the same date last year, and 39,000 tons in 1934. Stocks in New Zealand and afloat comprised 19,437 tons, against 15,969 tons.
