CORONATION PLANS

KING EDWARD’S FAVOURITE FLOWER. Rhododendrons, the King’s favourite flower, should play a large part next year in the Coronation Festival, which promises to be the most wonderful spectacle of the country. The six miles of route will be decorated in a uniform way so that the streets will appear harmonious, and the most striking effect will be obtained. Owing to the length of the route, seats will be reasonable in price, and nearly 60,000 spectators will be accommodated on the Embankment Gardens alone. The east carriage drive in Hyde Park will, for the first time, be flanked with tiers of seats on both sides. Londoners are already discussing the most favoured points of vantage. Those who have wonderful memories of great Royal events, seen from the tree lined Mall, refuse to consider choosing any other stance, while others prefer Constitution Hill or the Embankment, perhaps because the latter is the easiest place of all to get away from when the crowds begin to disperse, and because it affords a beautiful view of the river to enliven the time of waiting. Those who have private balconies along the route are following the lead of the London County Council in making sure that all balconies used for spectators will lie able to stand the unaccustomed weight. These precautions are being taken, following the death of a workman in Piccadilly, which took place when a balustrade on which he was working gave way.
