WORK OF THE MONTH

IN WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The following report of work done since last meeting was presented at Monday’s meeting of the Waipa County Council by the engineer, Mi J. W. Civil:— The weather experienced during the last month has caused fairly heavy damage to roads, .making extra maintenance, and slowing up construction work. KAIPAKI RIDING. Four hundred and sixty-six cubic yards of gravel have been carted from Fisher’s pit (Walker’s Gully) onto the following roads:—so cyds Speake, 4 cyds Kite’s, 16 cyds Tarr’s, 8 cyds Mill’s, 118 cyds Berquist’s, 196 cyds Norrish’s, 32 cyds Kaipaki-Rukuhia, and 42 cyds onto Parallel Road. Grading has been carried out on most of the roads in the Riding. PUKEKURA RIDING. To Awamutu - Cambridge Main Highway: 320 cyds of gravel have been carted from Grey’s pit, and sevejral portions of this road have been resurfaced, and grading has been carried out by motor grader.' Service road at Grey’s pit has been strengthened with 46 yds of gravel; and repairs have been carried out on the Kairangi Road with 52 cyds of gravel carted from Penpercorn’s pit. Grading has been carried out by motor grader on various road? in the Riding. i Drains between Cambridge Abattoirs and Leamington Town Boundary: With Councillor Fisher interviewed some five settlers interested in same, and suggested that they write asking the Council to formulate T scheme to deal with same. RANGIAOHIA RIDING. Great South Road Main Highway. Te Awamutu-Ohaupo: 64 cubic yards of metal chips have been supplied, carted and spread; also grading carried out by motor grader. Te Awamutu - Cambridge Main Highway: Engineering survey has been made of one mile, 74 chains of

this Highway, starting from a point on the already bituminous sealed portion of road, and ending at boundary of Mr H. Mandeno’s. 23 cubic yards Te Kawa metal and 8 cubic yards gravel have been used for carrying out repairs. Grading has been carried out by motor grader. 48 cubic yards of Te Kawa metal have been supplied and carted 28 Cubic yards onto Te Rahu road and the balance onto Peake’s road. Repairs in the way of grading formation, and removing grass sods have been carried out on Muir’s and Woodstock roads-66 cubic yards-on Muir’s and 28 cubic yards on Woodstock. Jary’s Road: Repairs have been carried out to this road with 18 cubic yards of gravel carted from Railway pit. Hairini-Puahue Road: Engineering survey has been made of some 39 chains of this road, including 6 chains of Long’s road, Waving in view the casrrying out of portion of the work at the Junction. Grading also has been carried out by motor grader. Grading and other surfacework has been carried out on other roads in the Riding. ORAKAU RIDING. Great South Road. ) Te AwamutuPuniu Bridge. 41 cubic yards Te Kawa metal >and 22 cubic yards gravel have been carted and spread, and the usual grading carried out by motor grader. Kihikihi - Arcpuni Main Highway. 183 cubic yards gravel from Rea’s pit and 43 cubic yards from Brett’s Quarry have been carted and spread. The stripping of portion of Rae’s pit has been carried out, removing some 160 cubic yards surface material. The usual grading has been carried out. • Resurfacing has been carried out to Mangere road with 88 cubic yards gravel from Rae’s pit, and the Waitete road with 80 cubic yards of gravel. Repairs have been carried out to St. Ledgers’ road with 221 cubic yards of Te Kawa metal, and Kihikihi flat road with 20 cubic yards of metal. Repairs and surfacework have been carried out on other roads in the Riding. MANGAiPIKO RIDING. Te Awamutu-Pirongia Main Highway: 37 cubic yards of Te Kawa met-

al, 18 cubic yards of Pirongia metal and 52 cubic yards of gravel from the Railway pit have been carted- and spread, and the usual grading carried out by motor grader. Frontier Road: 196 cubic yards of gravel sand have been carted and spread; 178 cubic yards from Steel’s pit and the balance from the Railway pit. Ham’s to Teddy’s Road: 170 cubic yards of gand haVe been carted from Perrin’s pit, and a good portion of this road has been resurfaced. Te Awamutu-Meadway’s Road: 290 cubic yards of gravel sand have been carted and spread on this road—224 cubic yards from the Railway pit, and the balance from Perrin’s. Bowman’s Road: This road has received attention; 56 cubic yards of sand having been carted and spread, and 30 cubic yards of sand from Perrin’s pit has also been carted on to Perrin’s road. The stripping of portion of Steel’s pit has been carried out, some 100 cubic yards of material being removed. Frankton-Pirongia Main Highway: 20 cubic yards of metal have been carted from the Pirongia Dump, and repairs carried out to same. Other roads have received attention, and grading has been carried out by motor grader. KAKEPUKU RIDING. Kakepuku Mountain Road: 29 cubic yards of Te KaWa metal have been supplied and carted, and repairs carried out to this road. Tokanui Road: Engineering survey has been made of some 124 chains of this road to eliminate the bad corners near the Mental gates. The small bridp-e between the two main gates, a few chains from this work, will require renewing at a very early date. 1 suggest that the bridge be replaced with, a reinforced concrete culvert and filling, giving a. two-way traffic, also that steps be taken for securing straight-out free grant for the whole work. Te Mawhai Road: Engineering survey has been made of some 14 chains of this road to improve alignment near Kirkham’s where side - cutting starts off the flat. I have written to the District Engineer of Railways drawing his attention to the steep depression on either side of the rails at the Te Mawhai railway crossing. Surface work has been carried out on other roads in the Riding.
