TOPICS OF THE HOUR. KING COUNTRY HAPPENINGS. (Our Resident Representative)., As a result of widespread efforts on behalf of the Anglican community of Otorohanga and district, to retain the services ot the Rev. Kenneth R. Small, vlsdar of Otorohanga, who recently resigned .to take over a parish at Wianganui East, the vicar is reconsidering his resignation as he is loath to leave the king Country, of which he is a consistent admirer. An interesting and instructive lee-' turc on live stock ailments, and particularly sterility in milking herds, Wis organised by the Otorohanga A. and P. Association, and delivered by Mr T. A. Blake, M.R.C.V.S., of the Agricultural Department, to a capacity attendance of farmers at Otorohanga on the evening of the 17th inst. The speaker went fully into the many ailments to which the units of the milking herds are prone, and suggested preventative treatment for the. various maladies. Mr Blake was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his valuable lecture. The September meeting of the Aratoro Women’s Institute drew an exceptionally large attendance, all district members being present. An interesting address on the ideals of the organisation was delivered by the president. The roll call, “Medical Plants and Their Uses,” proved highly interesting and instructive. Each member related experiences of the curative value of many New Zealand plants, herbs and shrubs. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Arndt, Logan and McGregor. Mrs W. K. Scott won the competition for paper roses, with Mrs A. Miller runner-up. . In this contest there was strong competition, the winner being awarded the honours by a large majority of votes. The Institute gave an ejoyable dance in the local hall, when there was a good attendance, of visitors. The Pip Estates Orchestra provided the dance music, while Mr H. Logan was the M.C. Miss L. Jones and Mr Patriot were winners of the Monte Carlo waltzing competition. 'The Aratoro Hall committee held a successful card evening to augment the funds recently, when the principal 500 contest was annexed by Mrs Curry and H. Logan. The Otorohanga Gun Club held a clay-bird shoot on the Island Reservo on Saturday afternoon, before a good number of interested spectators. The trophy shoot was won by M. Otway (Te Awamutu) after shooting off with B Scown and R. Cowan. The trophy was presented by Mr A. J. McCready. Wilson (Te Awamutu) wonrthe'hoviqe shoot. The bi" event, the Club.Shqjt Tronhv. resulted in both M. Pratt and T. McCready shooting all their nin» birds. The shnot-off was narrowly won by Pratt. The club is sending a team to Morrinsville to compete for the Reid Cup on October 3rd. OBITUARY: MRS E. A. SOUTHALL. The death occurred at the Waikato Hospital last week, after a short illness, of Elvie Ella,. the wife of Mr Edwin Allan Southall, and the eldest daughter of Mi- and Mrs Simons, of Te Kuiti Road, Otorohanga. The interment was in the Otorohanga Cemetery.
