The engineer te.ld Waipa County Council at to-day’s meeting that in his engineering survey of Te Awa-mutu-Cambridge main road, in connection with the proposal to seal the road for its whole length, he planned to shorten the road by about half a mile, including a cut-off of nearly 30 chains near Mr Geo. Hall’s property at Hairini. “ What is to be done with the timber in the old bridge over the Puniu River south of Kihikihi, where a new concrete bridge is erected to replace it ? ’ ’asked a Kihikihi district settler the other day. He went on to suggest that the .timber might be usefully employed in providing a bridge over the stream lower downstream, and linking the Tokanui Road with St. Ledgers’ Road. He explained that it would not be a bridge to carry a great deal of heavy traffic, but it would be a very useful access to Te Awamutu for all traffic from the evergrowing mental hospital and settlers in that locality, while it was conceivable that when Cruickshank’s Road was extended to Te Kawa there would be a great deal of light traffic. In a subsequent discussion it was suggested that the old bridge might be reerected higher upstream on what is known as Adam’s Road, between Parawera and W'harepuhunga, where the stream is much narrower.
