The wireless novice’s apparatus refused to work, and an expert neighbour was called in. “Have you tried putting a sixpense under the valve setting?” he suggested. The adjustment was made, and the novice listened again. For a moment there was silence. Then a voice was heard: “Aberdeen calling.”
