ITEMS OF INTEREST. TOWN BOARD MEETING. (Our Resident Representative). The ordinary monthly meeting of the Town Board was held on Thursday evening. Present; Commissioners F. O. R. Phillips (chairman), R. T. Rhodes, A. P. Grey, R. Bell, H. E. Lawrmce, A. J. McCready and Cyril Jacksen, with Mr P. H. Gosse, town clerk and engineer, in attendance. FINANCIAL STATEMENT. Since last meeting the total receipts amounted to £515 9s Bd, of which sum the Municipal Pictures produced £193 12s 6d and miscellaneous £243 6s sd, hall hire £l5 16d; water and ordinary rates furnished the bulk of the balance. A temporary debit balance of £99 13s 7d is disclosed —after outgoing accounts were paid. An application from the Otorohanga Timber Co. for improvements to their frontage and crossings was considered—The engineer stated that the offices and front fence encroached for several feet on the street. Tho company is to be advised of the encroachment before any action b ythe Board can be taken. An application from the builder of a, new dance hall, in Tuhoro Street, for definite information regarding sewerage connection was considered. —the applicant will be advised regarding the sewerage collection plans. An offer for a generator for use in the picture theatre was considered, and the Hall Committee was authorised to purchase same.

It was decided to pay subsidies to a number of the field staff, whilst seven others working under the auspices of the Board, may continue without any subsidy allowance. An application from local cricket and hockey clubs for the use of the Domain grounds in Kakamutu Road for a long term was considered. — The applicants were informed that the Domain is at present under a lease which does not expire until July next. In the meantime, the Cricket and Hockey Associations arc asked to furnish particulars as to how they propose to put the property in condition fo’j the proposed playing areas.

iThe matter of a party wall between the Town Hall property and a property alongside on which a company is about to build, was the subj’ect of ver" considerable discussion.

Commisioners were of the opinion that the Board should not grant the concessions to the company that were proposed in the agreement. On the motion of Com. Bell it was decided not to "rant any right-of-way on the Town Hall frontage. The Board were agreeable to the use of the north side of the Hall as a party wall, for certain concessions affecting the disposal of the storm water from the Municipal buildings. The matter of' the legal agreement was left to the chairman and Com. Bell to finalise. A long list of accounts amounting to £414 4s 4d was passed for payment.

It was decided to mark off areas of 15ft on each side of the bowsers in the main streets where parking of motor vehicles is to be prohibited. The engineer’s report was adopted. The question of properties within the Board’s area, now administered Ijy the Maori Land Board, was considered. The chairman explained that the Judge of the Native Land Court and the president of the Maori Land Board had recently made an inspection of the Otorohanga areas, under the jurisdiction of the Board, and they were most anxious to have the areas occupied on the best possible terms for the tenants and the owners. Mi - Gosse reported: 1. Sewerage Scheme. I have completed survey of location, and the taking of levels, the drawing of plans, and writing up Specifications and General Conditions, and other Contract documents are in progress, which I hope to have ready for next meeting of the Board, the pencil plans of location and levels can be submitted to the works committee for final approval before being inked in at an early date.

2. Ranfurly Street Improvements. I took levels of this work which comprise the formation of footpath, and widening of road formation to grade, the metalling of same, and the construction of two vehicular crossings. ESTIMATE. 180 c. yds. of earth fillings at 2s per c. yd 9 0 0 12 c. yds. chips at 7s per c. yd 4 4 0 45 c. yds. of shingle at 4s per c. yd 9 0 0 2 only metal crossings at 28s each 2 16 0 £25 0 0 Mr Wilshire offers £7 as a subsidy to this work. 3. Te-Kawa Street drain, Mr Pratt and the Health Inspector inspected this drain, several complaints have been received by me of an offensive smell arising from the swamp around Mrs Palmer’s house, it seems that the drainage from the house has been going into the swamp tor some considerable time, Mi Thompson the Health Inspector has written to Mrs Palmer notifying her to abate the nuisance. 4. Maintenance metal. 84 c. yds. has been placed on the roads, Is ot which has been put on the No. 2 Highway. 5. Turongo Street. The water-chan-nel from Mrs Matson’s property to Section 10, Block XVI has been deepened, which will now take all stormwater into the above-mentioned sections. 6. Relief Labour has been placed on streets infested with blackberry and cutting same. 7. Ragwort poisoning. Lime and sodium is being obtained ready for am early start, some time within a week from date. 8. Main Highways. The Board will please note the large grant made. 9. Highways Council in reply to the Board’s Annual Estimates. 10. Auckland-Wellington Highway has been patched with tar-macadam where required. In this connection I recommend that one half of this highway approximately 26 chains be repaired and tar-sealed. 11. Puha Terrace. Levels have been taken, plan drawn and road pegged off (5i chains). This work can be performed by relief labourers using

barrows no cartage necessary, formation 20 feet. 12. Main drain from Dr Bennington’s to culvert Hinewai Street opposite School grounds is being got ready for taking levels, it is now overgrown with blackberry, which will have to be cut before levels can be put in. 13. Bledisloe Avenue. The Culvert near school grounds gateway has been extended 12 feet and metalled, the concrete facing block will be constructed as soon as possible. 14. Clarke Street extension into Island Reserve, I would ask the Board to give instructions in regards to the taking of levels and proper planning of this roadway. 15. Rockeries, Cemetery, Garden Plots, are all in fair order and receiving attention. , . .
