BOYCE CUP CHALLENGE. WAIPA v. CAMBRIDGE. The final, challenge to Waipa for the Boyce Cup this season was played at Albert Park on Saturday afternoon, Cambridge being the challengers. Mr H. Taylor was the referee. The teams were:— Waipa.—F. Dalziel, J. Ward, R. Newton, M. Kingi, T. Dalziel, G. Di'ack, P. Bell. H. Wynyard, R. West, J. Hughes, P. Martinovich, J. Emery* R. McColl, L. Waipa kicked off, but play was kept in midfield, with each side using the line to gain ground. Cambridge was doing best in the lineouts and following fast. The Cambridge forwards kept coming through fast, having found tha easy places, and it took some solid defence work to hold then- out. Waipa got a much-needed penalty, but Cambridge again flashed through for Watson to score a try and Watt added the minor points. Cambridge 11, Waipa 6. After half-time Fitzgerald broke through, but lost possesion. However, McColl carried on right to the corner. The visitors gradually got out of trouble but Kingi sent them hack. However, (offside play gave Cambridge a penalty. Ward received, but his kick was charged down, and Cambridge attacked solidly. Newton was injured in stopping the rush. Another penalty for Cambridge saw Watson find the line at Waipa’s 25 flag. Three Waipa forwards bustled upfield, but had no supnort and Ward had an unsuccessful shot at a field goal. A little lated Bell sent to Diack and the latter raced through almost to the line. Cambridge were penned on their goal line, but scrums enabled them to push out of the danger zone. Ward tried the blind side and next centred to the goal posts, but a force resulted. Waipa pack were putting a little mare life into their play, and rushed the ball to the line where Trubshaw seemed lucky to mark. A penalty two minutes later saw T. Dalziel kick a goal. Waipa 9, Cambridge 11. Cambridge attacked, but were forced back, and lineplay followed. Then Kingi opened play, but his short punt was marked by Trubshaw. Again the Waipa pack broke through, but Trubshaw cleared. Watson led his forwards upfield, but an interception let the Waipa’s attack again, and Hughes \vas nearly over. A scrum on Cambridge’s line saw Bell dive for the line but he was held up. From the next scrum Bell sent to Kingi, but he also was held up almost on the line. Hard play by Cambridge forwards got relief, and though Waipa thrust time and again they could not get over. A penalt” gave Cambridge a little relief. But Waipa weire quickly back again, and F. Dalziel kicked hip’h for the forwards to follow fast, but a scrum stopped what looked like a probable try. Then Ward flashed up the blind side, but was forced out near the corner.
