APPEALS FOR WORK
EMPLOYERS’ RESPONSE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The readiness of employers to reinstate tradesmen, even at some temporary sacrifice, was displayed recently during an investigation in con-
nection with the Labour Department’s replacement scheme. A young man who had served his time at a certain trade, but who had been out of work for several i years, had made frequent applications for employment to a firm which carried on the trade he had learned.
Though an extra hand was not required, the manager offered him work at a wage slightly under the rate for a journeyman, the reason being that the man had been away from the trade for several years and was not conversant with the latest methods employed in it. As this offer was accompanied by an assurance to pay him the full wage as soon as he became efficient, it was accepted, and he is now in a permanent job.
