THE TOWN CLOCK

WHERE TO RE-ERECT IT. SITE BEHIND POLICE STATION FAVOURED. Mention was made at the Borough Council meeting on Monday evening that if the post office clock is reerected on the police station property there might be objection that the clock striking the hours might disturb the “ boarders ” in the lock-up ! The Mayor recalled that the postal authorities had notified the Council that the clock tower would have’to be demolished consequent upon the erection of the post office 'extensions. This raised two questions—one, where would the tower be re-erected; and, two, what finance would be available for the work ? It had been suggested that a location on the high land near the police station would be very suitable. and if this was agreed to it would be timely to open negotiations with the Justice Department. Cr Montefiore thought a point at the intersection of Sloane, Alexandra, and Arawata Streets would be more suitable. The tower could be erected in steel, and this would be economic in space. The tower would act as a “ silent policeman ” at the apex of these streets. Sloane Street was to be widened 14 feet. The Mayor did not consider this a suitable site. Cr Gifford believed the highway authorities would object to any obstruction to traffic. Cr North said he favoured the Justice Department site. Cr Brown wondered whether the police authorities would complain on the score that “ the chimes would disturb their boarders ! ” It was decided to apply to the Justice Department for an area on the south-eastern corner of Te Awamutu police station site for the purpose of re-erecting the clock tower.
