WAR VERSUS LIBERTY
“I think that war is a lesser evil than the loss of liberty or the forcible overthrow of liberal democracy,” said the Marquess of Lothian at the National Peace Congress. “War may sometimes be preferable to certain kinds of injustice. But war is a weapon that should not be lightly invoked. I think the pacifists are doing the work not of God but of the gangsters, I would pay the price of war to prevent any of the present dictatorial systems in the world or a combination of them from sweeping away our own liberty or the liberty of the Empire or of Western democracy as a whole. Universal disarmament is one thing. Disarmament in the face of gansters is another. We must be strong enough to defend to the full civilisation, not only from internal violence but external attack. As often before, freedom may have to go armed.”
