A KEY POSITION
“From the point of view of defence Palestine occupies a strategical position of immense importance. It is the Clapham Junction to all the air routes between this country and between Africa and Asia. It has occupied an immensely important position in the new condition in the Mediterranean. Cyprus, Palestine and Egypt effectively held make it possible not only to keep open the Suez Canal, but effectively to hold the whole of the Eastern Mediterranean. -Our success in this experiment would do credit to ourselves and would enormously strengthen our reputation in all that ancient bridge between the civilisation of the East and West which was called the Near Fast, a region derelict and destroyed almost by the wars and misgovernment of centuries which is now on the eve of a real renaissance and prosperity.”—Mr Amery, M.P.
