It was the monthly meeting of the college debating society. Upon Taxem Major fell the task of opening the proceedings. “The subject under discussion this evening,” he said, “is ‘Simplified Spelling.’ I think there is a growing need for its use. At present it is difficult to grasp the meaning of some words owing to our complicated system of spelling. “Hear, hear,” applauded Hilife. “Why, I sent a wire to my father asking for ten pounds. He replied that acquiescence meant ruin to him.”
