WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
PIRONGIA BRANCH. There was a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Pirongia Women’s Institute on Tuesda- Mrs Lorimer presiding. After the usual business, final arrangements wqre m'ade for the annual birthday dance. A letter from a mem. ber staying at Bryant House, Raglan, was read and members were glad to learn of the happy time being spent there by a numiber of women in need of change and rest. The roll call was “An unusual event in your life.” The delegate to the Dominion Conference, held in Dunedin (Mrs Bainbridge), then gave her report and outlined the principal events which tock place during her visit. Mrs Bainbridge was thanked for her report. Mrs Lorimer then welcomed Miss Hills, of Te, Pahu, who had come to give the members a travel talk, “A Peep at Switzerland” being her theme, which proved most interesting. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Miss Hills. A small presentation was given the new institute baby, little Lilian Woolston.
Competitions resulted: Slice of fruit cake, M’rs iWt H. Bell 1, Mrs Lorimer 2, Mrs Bainbridge 3; artificial flowers (collection), Mrs W. H. Bell 1, Mirs Bla,r.ry 2. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting.
The dance organised by the Pirongia Women’s Institute to celebrate its fifth birthday, was held on Wednesday evening and proved a great success. Visitors were present from far and near despite the wet weather. The decorations were of flowers and greenery in the institute colours (green and gold) and were most effective. Music was rendered by Mrs Leckie’s Orchestra. OHAUPO BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Ohaupo Women’s Institute was held on July 29th. when there were about sixty present, including visitors from Motumaoho, Thames, Auckland, and Hamilton. A vote was carried that thq money collected at a dance held in aid of “The Crippled Children’s Fund,” should be sent direct to Auckland. The competition was won by Mrs Cowley. Mrs Bell was first and Mrs Montford second in the silver paper pictures. A very interesting demonstration was given by Mrs Ryburn, Paterangi, on making seagrass fireside stools, which was greatly appreciated. The nest meeting will be held in the Memorial Hall on August 26th, and Will be a flowier show.
Afternoon tea concluded the meeting.
