RADIO IN SCHOOLS

EDUCATION BOARD’S OFFER. Writing to the Te AwamutU District High School Committee last Monday evening, the secretary of the Auckland Education Board stated that in view of the growing demand for radio equipment for schools the Department was prepared to receive applications for radio sets from primary and post primary schools. No subsidy would be paid on voluntary subscriptions, and no part ot the Government grant to schools may be used for the purpose. The cost to schools would bo reduced to a minimum as the equipment would be used for educational purposes. It the use ot the set was restricted to these purposes, no license fee would be payable. School authorities desiring radio equipment should communicate with the Education Department stating, among other things: The station or stations whose broadcasts they desire to receive; the nature of the local reception from that station; the amount they are prepared to pay for a set; the kind of set required, e.g„ all electric or battery; the number of valves considered necessary for efficient reception; the most convenient point where delivery can be taken. On receipt of this information the Department will consider the matter and then inform the committee of the amount that should be forwarded to the Department or paid into the Public Account. When this was done the Department, would arrange to have the set despatched. Schools desiring an additional loud speaker in connection with any set should include this in their order. The necessary adjustments would then be made to the set before despatch to the school. Many schools possessed gramophones and records. If it was desired to use these in connection with the radio set, gramophone "pick-ups’’ could be supplied and, if the latter was included in the order for the set, the set could be adjusted accordingly before despatch.
