FRUIT INDUSTRY
APPEAL FOR INQUIRY. A decision to appeal to the Government for the appointment of a select committee to inquire into the “deplorable state of the fruit industry,” with particular relation to the disparity between prices paid by consumers and those received by growers, was made at the Central Tablelands Fruit Conference at Bathurst. A motion urging the appointment of a trust to control the city markets in Sydney—which is aimed at eliminating the control of the City Council —was also carried. It was also decided to press for a stricter control of agents. A motion urging the institution of the duplicate docket system . was moved by Mr Stanford (Orange). Mr R. W. Peacock (Bathurst) said that the fruitgrowers looked to the Government to see that they got a better deal. It would be very helpful if a select committee was appointed to investigate all the distributing agencies between the producer and consumer.
Mr W. J. Nancarrow (Orange) considered that growers were to blame in some instances. A public Inquiry should be ’made into the whole of the fruit industry. Conference carried the motion unanimously.
