CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
MONTHLY MEETING. GENERAL BUSINESS DEALT WITH. Mr N. McAlister piesidea at the monthly meeting of the Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce, held on Tuesday evening. Also present were Messrs R. H. Annibal, J. Oliphant, F. W. Bevin, L. G. Armstrong, E. N. Pascoe, W. A. Woodward, J. L. Callaghan and the secretary, Mr G. O. Jourdain. The secretary, Associated Chambers, wrote re membership campaigns and their results, and inquired for certain data. The Associated Chambers secretary forwarded copy of a letter dated May 29th, sent to the Hon. W. Nash, Minister of Finance, on the subject of the State Advances Corporation Bill, raising several points which it was requested should receive special consideration before the legislation is proceeded with. Answering an inquiry as to the prospects for an advertising and publicity campaign among business interests, it was decided to reply that the Chamber is interested and perhaps could co-operate in a move for promoting the welfare of the business community.
This led to the suggestion that a dinner could be held in conjunction with the forthcoming annual meeting and perhaps the publicity expert could visit Te Awamutu that day. Opportunity could be given him to address members at that meeting. The claim made that a great deal of business is lost to the retailers in the smaller towns through the competition of large firms in the bigger cities who conduct extensive mail order departments, and many retailers suffer from the acute competition of chain stores in their midst, was agreed to.
It was decided to arrange for a dinner on the occasion of the annual meeting, and to afford opportunity for the publicity expert to address those present. A sub-committee was appointed to make the necessary arrangements, comprising Messrs McAlister, Oliphant, Armstrong and Jourdain.
