WANTED A HUSBAND

An orphan girl in Johannesburg. South Africa, is willing to be a good wife and housekeeper to any man in New Zealand who is prepared to pay her travelling expenses to this country and claim her as his wife. That is how she has written to the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr J. W. Beanland). She has made a request that Mr Beanland should help her to find a husband, and Mr Beanland has unconditionally consented. He said that the Mayor of Christchurch was called on to adopt many roles and to do many things in the course of his duty, and he would gladly do his part In finding a husband for the girl in South Africa. He was not acquainted with the duties of a matrimonial agent, but for all that he would be pleased to hear from any young man who would be willing to enter into correspondence with the girl, who apparently had her heart set on coming to New Zealand. In her letter to the Mayor -the girl stated that she was taking advantage of leap year to assist her to find a husband in New Zealand. Her reason for seeking his help was that she was an orphan and had worked hard for the few pounds she was able to earn. “I am crazy about travelling,” she added. “My only wish is to come to New Zealand. I am 21, strong, healthy, domesticated and homely. I am also a lover of children. I am willing to be a good wife and housekeeper to the man willing to pay my travelling expenses and claim me as his wife.” The girl gives her name as Gladys Graham, and her address as 7 Alsyth Road, Forest Town, Johannesburg.
