THE PIG INDUSTRY

RE-ORGANISATION COMING. Considerable re-organisation of the pig industry was contemplated by the Government, said the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. W. Lee Martin, in addressing the Auckland Provincial Conference of the Farmers’ Union recently. In regard to a remit carried by the conference urging the appointment of expert advisers in the pig industry the Minister said that he had taken steps in this regard prior to lAving Wellington.

The Government was prepared to help the New Zealand Co-op. Pig Marketing Association to the fullest possible extent, said the Minister, in re ferring to a remit that all members of the Farmers’ Union should give their fullest support to the New Zealand Co-operative Pig Marketing Association.

The Minister expressed the hope that a great improvement in the marketing and collecting of bobby calves would be effected. If private interests could not succeed in operating the business successfully, the industry would be placed in the hands of a body which would be the sole collector and buyer of bobby calves. He had private advice that zoning would take place in the Waikato this coming season.

“I can say definitely that as far as the New Zealand pig marketing is concerned every assistance will be given, for it is our business to eliminate every economic factor between producer and consumer,” concluded the Minister.
