CENSUS FIGURES

PRINCIPAL CENTRES OF POPULATION.

TCWfNS IN ORDER OF SIZE. Comparative census returns of New Zealand cities, boroughs, counties and town districts have been issued in the monthly abstract of statistics for May, the figures representing the Government Statistician’s first official publication of census results. A remarkable coincidence disclosed in the returns is that the urban area population of Invercargill and Wanganui are exactly the same.

In the following table of urban area populations (including Maoris) the figures given for the 1936 census are still subject to revision. In all cases where boundaries have been altered compensatory adjustments have been made in the 1926 census figures. The Dunedin figure for 1926 includes 4490 visitors to the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition over and above the ordinary level of visitors: 1936 1926 Auckland—
