RUGBY FOOTBALL

WAIPA CHAMPIONSHIPS.

LAST SATURDAY’S GAMES. Fine weather prevailed for the continuation of the Waipa Rugby Union’s championships last Saturday, and five games were played at Albert Park in the presence of a fair number of spectators, the sixth match being played at Waikeria. Results: — Thirds.— Suburbs 18 v. High School 3. Te Awamutu 12 v. Old Boys 9. Juniors.— Ngutunui 12 v. "Waikeria B 11. Te Awamutu 36 v. Te Mawhai 5. (Waikeria A 44 v. Old Boys 6. Seniors.— Te Awamutu 16 v. Technical Old Boys 9. THE SENIORS. The principal attraction at Albert Park tes the meeting of Te Awamutu with Hamilton Technical Old Boys (Hamilton) in the inter-union Taranaki scheme. The teams were:— Technical.—Liddy, Porteous, Buick, Stevens, Gibb, St. George, Broad, darter, Rae, Pearte, Harland, Taylor, Clough, Harwood, Pardingiton. Te Awamutu.—Lewis, W. Tombs, W. Brady, T. Baker, J. Hanna, M. Bell, E. Adams, J. Turney, R. Spence, F. McAlpine, W. Daniell, J. Askew, C. Craig, J. Scott, P. Grace. Te Awamutu, with the breeze, at once attacked and Technical had to force, and were kept on the defensive for several minutes. J. Turney broke ilhrough, .taking a pass to force his way over for a try. Lewis failed with the kick. Within three minutes Technical were almost over and Pardington kicked a penalty goal. Te AMamutu 3), Technical 3. Scrums and play in midfield followed, with Te Awjamutu forwards bustling hard, but they were gradually forced back, Technical working upfield on their left wing. Adams worked the blind side of a scrum to advantage and then Daniell kicked through, but Liddyj returned, and play went to neutral territory again. Soon Technical forced and then were kept defending from Te Awamutu forward rushes. Even play followed, but again the local pack was showing to most advantage. Hard play took Technical out of danger, and Stevens rushed up the right! wing with a swervy run to gain 20 yards. Te Awiamutu backs combined in a nice passing rush till Taylor intercepted, but he was up-ended. Play brightetied up, and the visitors were doing better, but Spence bustled through nearly to the posts, and handed to Brady, who scored an easy one. Bell converted. Te Awamutu 8, Technical 3. Te Awamutu forwards kept up their bustling tactics, and had the visitors hard pressed. Relief came with a penalty but the ball went out at the 25 flag. Half-time came with play near the halfway line.

Technical commenced with a solid attack, but Tombs cleared with a line kick. St. George put in a good run to put his backs in action, but they lost possession, and play became open. Porteous dashed up the side line to gain valuable ground, but the defence held, and Brady and Baker took play into Technical’s 25, but it was beaten off. A couple of minutes later Porteous and Stevens rushed down the line, passing neatly, to beat all the opposition, and Porteous scored a try wide out. The kick failed. Technical 6, Te Awamutu 8. This success caused the visitors to put more spark into their play, and the spectators enjoyed it,, even if the opposition didn’t. A little later Technical were awarded a penalty, and Pardington narrowly missed the goal with a fine effort. Adams stopped a passing rush by the visiting backs that looked dangerous. Again the Tectyiicals came up, but were stopped, and scrums, followed, from which Adams found the line. A little later Paddington had another unsuccessful shot from a penalty. The visitors were throwing the t»Il about smartly, and several times created thrills, but the defence held, and Te Awamutu backs gave a taste of what they could do in the same manner, Tombs, Bell and Hanna being prominent. Then the best movement of the day occurred. Tombs drew his man, passed to Bell, back to Tombs, and the ball went across field and Hanna, cutting in cleverly, scored under the crossbar. Bell converted. Te Awamutu 13, Technical 6. Almost at once the same tactics were adopted by Tombs, Hanna and Brady, for Tombs to score, a meritorious try. Bell’s kick failed. Te Awamutu 16, Technical 6. Undaunted, the visitors attacked again, but kicking too hard enabled Te Awamutu to force. Soon the local forwards, headed by McAlpine, raced upfield, and Liddy saved with |a hefty kick to the line at halfway. A little later Pardington kicked a good goal from a penalty. Technical 9, Te Awamutu 16. Offside by Craig in a lineout let Technical make ground and Te Awamutu were hard pressed at the corner. The defence held, and attack after (attack was fought off. Then Baker raced up t'he side line past halfway where play was kept until the final whistle.. The store was: Te Awiamutu ....: 16 Technical 9 M|r R. L. Adams refereed. Rovers v. Marist —This game was played at .Riigby Park, Hamilton, and the visitors found they had not a strong enough team to bring about the defeat of Marist, who combined nicely, and gave a very attractive display. A feature, however, was the poor goal-kicking, seven tries by Marist being unconverted, besides some Kicks from penalties. Trieji for the winners were scored by !Wl Cassidy, Ryan, Brodrick (2), Kilpatrick, Mills, F. Cassidy, while Royers’ only try was obtained by Irwin, and Young converted. Rovers- were going well at times, but missed some of their former stalwarts; and it is expected they will put up a better showing next Saturday.

THE JUNIORS. Ngutunui v. Wlaikeria B—This

game, on No. 2 ground, was refereed by Mr S. Eaton. Early in the game play was very even, and many opportunities to score were missed. Ngutunui forwairds in one dash struggled over, but an infringement called them back, and then "Wlaikeria forced to get relief. Soon Tautoko scored a try at the earner for Ngutunui-, from a mis-kick, but the kick at goal failed. A little later Panapa scored a try, and again the kick failed. A third try came when J. Pekia bustled over, but the kick again failed. Waikeria took a turn at attack, and their left winger secured to run right round and grass the tlail behind the crossbar. The kick was successful. A few minutes later the same player scored at the corner, but the minor points were not added. However, a penalty goal put the Waikerias in the lead, and a ding-dong go followed:, with both sides striving desperately to score. In the final stages Ngutunui were most effective, and Tautoko scored an unconverted try.

Te Mawhai v. Te Awamutu. —Mr H. Taylor" had charge of this game, also on No. 2 ground. Te Mawhai were first to score. Daniell going over from a scramble, and Holden converted; but this proved the only score for that team, for Te Awamutu quickly dominated play, and successive scores were obtained by L. Lawry (a penalty goal), Ward (try) McDonald a try converted by L. Lawry, Bulford a try, Morris a try, Lawry a try, Bulford a try (converted by E. Lawry), two more tries by forwards, and Bulford a try (Ward converting).

Waikeria A v. Old Boys.—4)ld Boys sent a weak team to Waikeriia- to mett the A fifteen from that institution, and t'he hame players had a very easy win, by 44 points to 6. Mr T. Brown refereed.

THE THIRDS. Suburbs v. High School. —Suburbs played better football, to beat the lighter School combination comfortably. Blair kicked a penalty goal for School, and for Suburbs Todd scared two tries, Beet and Rose one each, G .ace converting three of tlhem. Mr R. H. Annibal had charge.

Te Awamutu v. Old Boys.—Mr Taylor refereed this game, in which scores for Te Awamutu were got by H. Savage (try), K. Duggan (try), P. Gedge (try) and the halfback (try). For Old Boys L. Clarke, M. Haiselden and F. Ghunn each scored a try. There were no conversions. The play was bright throughout.
