NEW RELIEF PAY
LOCAL BODY CO-OPERATION. The need for the co-operation of local employing authorities in the operation of the new standard rate of pay of 2s per hour to all No. 5 scheme relief workers which,' with the increased sustenance scale of pay, is to begin on June 1, is again pointed out in a circular from the Department of Labour to certifying officers. The rfew rates, which will apply to Europeans and Maoris alike, were recently announced by the Minister of Employment, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong. In the operation of the new standard rate, local employing bodies are asked to provide workers with additional assistance from their own funds sufficient to meet the difference in wages cost to enable all men to be given employment to the nearest half day above the actual time factor covered by the new scale. For instance, in the case of a single man, the Government is prepared to pay 21s for 101 hours’ work. In addition to this, local bodies are requested to provide one, and a-half hours’ work at the same standard rate, involving an increase of 3s. Thus single men will work 12 hours weekly for 245. In the various classes of married men local authorities are asked to provide extra time, ranging from threequarters of an hour to 25 hours. The total weekly pay and hours to be worked will then become as follow: Married man, 40s for 20 hours; married, one child, 48s for 24 hours; married, two children, 48s for 24 hours; married, three or four children, 56s for 28 hours; married-, five children or six children, 64s for 32 hours; and married, seven or more children, 72s for 36 hours.
