IN ABYSSINIA
FORMER WAHAROA RESIDENT It is possible that Mr Allan O. Smith, from Waharoa, was in the air raid made recently by the Italians at Denra Markos, when two British missionaries were killed and a British Red Cross hospital was bombarded (says the Matamata Record). Mr Smith, who is about 26 years of age, is the son of Mr and Mrs J. C. Smith, of Waharoa. He attended school at Hamilton, and was trained for missionary work in the Bible Training Institute at Auckland. He left New Zealand about two years ago to join the Sudan Interior Mission.
Referring t“ a cable message, Mr J. C. Smith said that according to southern papers his son was missing or wounded. However, he felt that no news was good news, and that if anything untoward had happened he would have been informed. The last letters received from his son were written from Yerga Alen on November 22 and from Nagalli on January 5. In the first letter the news was that his son was leaving with a party for Wadara, which was southeast of Daressa. In the last letter his son said he was awaiting instructions and that very heavy rain had set in. The Swedish Red Cross party, which was later bombed, was also at Nagalli awaiting instructions.
