UNLICENSED SERVICE
CARTAGE OF BUILDERS’ SUPPLIES.
For operating an unlicensed goods service Fred Bredenbeck, motor proprietor, was fined £lO and ordered to pay costs by Mr F. H. Levien, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court.at Te Kuiti this week. Mr Levien warned Bredenbeck that should he offend again the fine would probably he rather heavy. . T. C. Clissold, main highways inspector, said he apprehended defendant driving on the Great South Road nt Horotiu. His lorry contained builders’ supplies and a quantity of ale. The defendant claimed that all the load was his own property, but upon inquiries being made witness found the hardware was consigned to a Te Kuiti builder. Mr K. W. Low, for Bredenbeck, said the defendant had for 20 yearwpperated from Auckland to Te Kuiti,. not as a general run, but .on contracts to deliver builders’ supplies. On the Magistrate asking if this was an isolated case the inspector said that in October last Bredenbeck was fined £5 oh a similar charge. Witness had stopped defendant on other trips, but he had claimed the goods as his own. He had made inquiries from the brewery where defendant had obtained large quantities of liquor, but found that he had paid cash for this. The Magistrate: That is all he has been carrying? The inspector: Yes—mostly, sir. Mr Low: How do you know that? The inspector: “ I have apprehended him before. He stated that temporary licenses to cart goods from oi to Auckland could only be obtained for furniture or stock. Mr Levien, in imposing the fine of £lO and costs, said if defendant appeared before him again he might find the penalty very much greater. Fourteen days were allowed in which to pay.
