■ “This man knew quite well he could not drive a heavily laden lorry over the bridge across the Puniu river, south of Kihikihi,” said Inspector Metcalfe in the local S.M. Court on Wednesday, when Thomas Langford, employed by an Auckland-New Plymouth goods service firm, was charged with exceeding the load limit of 41 tons. The inspector also told the court that some time ago he had attended at the bridge on several occasions late at night—between midnight and 1.30 a.m.—to warn drivers of heavy lorries that they must proceed by the detour route. He had actually accompanied them until they were on the right road. To another question, the inspector said that defendant in the present case was not one of the drivers shown the detour route, but he (the inspector) was confident he knew it all right.
