An elderly lady had had an Eton crop. When her little grandson came to pay her a visit for a Jay or two he looked curiously at the short hair and said, “Ye dinna look like an auld woman noo, grannie.” Grandmother, rather pleased, asked, “And whit dae I look like noo, Jimmy?” “Ye look like an auld man,” replied the boy.

The weather was hot, and the visitor had never before been in such a poorly ventilated hotel. In vain did he try to sleep. It was useless. He had endeavoured to open a window before going to bed, but he had found them all firmly secured. At last, in desperation, he got out of bed, wrapped a blanket round his hand, and smashed a window. Then, already feeling cooler, he returned to bed and fell into a deep and refreshing sleep. Next morning he had to pay ten shillings for having smashed the mirror of the wardrobe.

A class of boys had been told to write an essay on a cricket match. A few seconds went by, and one pupil put up his hand to say he had finished. The teacher called him out, and when she looked at his effort 'this is what she saw: “Essay on Cricket Match.—Rain. No game.”
