SHIPS THAT PASS

HOLD UP TRAFFIC IN BUSY STREETS

Thirty miles from the sea, ships sometimes cause many Manchester workmen to arrive late for work. A victim, Mr Ellis Smith, M.P. for Stoke-on-Trent, w’ho lives at Eccles, near Manchester, is to bring this problem forward in Parliament. The swing bridges at Barton and Trafford, over the ghip Canal, hold up streams of business traffic when ships are passing through, and it is alleged that in this manner workmen from Irlam, Cadizhead, and the Weaste end of Salford, who have to cross the bridges to their work, are sometimes delayed for as long as 20 minutes to half an hour. Mr Ellis Smith is to ask the Minister of Transport if it will be possible to have river traffic regulated so that it will not pass under the bridge during business rush hours.
