LESS ALCOHOL

DECLINE HASTENED IN BRITAIN. The decrease in the consumption of alcoholic liquors, continuous in Britain since 1919-20, took another downward plunge last year. This is stated In a report by the commissioners of Customs and Excise, official body responsible for collecting United Kingdom tariffs. The quantities of such duty-paid alcohol, it appears, fell from 14,200,000 proof gallons in 1925-26 to 9,400,000 in 1934. The corresponding quantities per head of population in the same period went down from one third ,bf a proof gallon to one fifth. On the other hand the quantity of nondutiable “spirit” i. e., that- used for industrial and research purposes, Increased during the same decade from less than 10,250.000 proof gallons to more than 34,250,000. This increase far more than balances the decline for dutiable purposes.
