MANAWARU

ANNIVERSARY BALL With their usual luck, the evening chosen by the Manawaru Hall Committee for their annual ball turned out miserably wet. At 7 o’clock the rain was coming down in torrents and the souls of the committeemen writhed in despair. However, things brightened up all round, and shortly after eight the weather brightened up considerably and the committee brightened up accordinly. A good few couples turned out eventually, but no where near sufficient to pay expenses. As usual the preparations made were magnificent and great credit is clue to the committee for the work they put in. The hall was decorated with palms, hung with innumerable coloured butterflies, while from a central canopv of coloured globes and Chinese lanterns, balloon hung streamers radiated to all parts of the room. The music was supplied by the Elite Jazz Band, and was of the best. The polished floor was up to specifications, and after a few dances became so fast that it was hard to keep one’s footing on it. The programme was opend by the grand march, which was directed by Mr E. C. Wykes. During the evening several_dances were introduced —a streamer waltz, a butterfly waltz, a confetti waltz and a destruction waltz. This last was not on the programme, but it is a usual thing. All the dancers participate. The only rule is to pull down as many of the decorations as possible during the dance, and to guard your trophies against the other couples on the floor. A sumptuous supper followed the first half of the programme and was so tempting that most of the visitors did full justice to it, even unto the third and fourth helping. After supper an extra was played by Miss McLaren. The dancing continued unti labout 2 a.m. and everybody went home delighted with the evening’s entertainment. The committee, to whom great credit is due, was as follows: Misses E. McLaren, R. Ryan, Downey, Foote and Jamieson, and Messrs B. Osborne, C. Black, T. McLaren, B. Fitzgerald and J. Keaney. The M.’sC. were Messrs E. C. Wykes, P. McLaren and J. Keaney. “THE LEGACY.” “The Legacy” was presented at Manawaru on Tuesday evening last before a well-filled house. The entertainment was a great success in every way. Half of the proceeds are to be handed to the Boy Scouts in the district.
