HOSPITAL SECRETARYSHIP
The Waihi Hospital Board at a special meeting on Tuesday night decided that the clerical work in connection with the Board’s affairs does not justify the appointment of a whole-time secretary, and adopted the recommendation of the investigation committee that the position be offered to the present secretary as a parttime post with a salary of £l5O per annum. The committee recognised that if the duties of house-manager were to be added to the clerical work involved ip keeping the Board’s accounts, and furnishing the various statistical returns required by the Government, the services of a wholetime officer would be necessary, but were disinclined to advocate the creation of such a position at this juncture in view of the fact that the Waihi hospital district is likely, in the comparatively near future, to be amalgamated with Thames, with headquarters in the latter centre. This was a common-sense decision, as the fusion of the two districts at an early date would necessarily mean a material reduction in the salary of the appointee, and possibly lead to his services being entirely dispensed with. The alternative put forward and adopted by the full Board offers a happy and fitting solution of the difficulty, and should give satisfaction to both parties. If Mr Wallnut sees fit to accept the offer he will have ample time on his hands to devote to his Mayoral and other duties, and the Board will have his clerical services at a salary which cannot be regarded as other than sufficient for the time he is asked to devote to its af- [ fairs.—Waihi Telegraph.
