THOMPSON'S TRACK

LETTER TO MINISTER The following letter has been sent to the Minister for Public Works by the Piako County’s Clerk re Thompson’s Track:— Referring to your letter of 24th March, the Council have again considered the matter of expenditure on Thompson’s Track, but regret that they cannot see their way to place any money on this year’s estimates, either out of county or riding funds. With regard to the representations made by the Te Aroha Chamber of Commerce, what they require is a road ovbr which cars could travel in the summer at any rate, and nothing less than this I think would satisfy them.

Very little moving of stock to and from Tauranga and Piako Counties is carried on at the .present time. The County does not consider that it is warranted in spending the ratepayers’ money on what they do not think is an absolute necessity, from the County point of view. Only one ratepayer would benefit by the opening up of this track, and his rates are required for expenditure between Te Aroha and his farm apart from the track altogether. The estimate of £750 appears to be a fairly large expenditure for the benefit of one or two stockdrivers, but if the Government considered it necessary the Council will be prepared to expend that amount or any smaller one voted on behalf of 'the Government, and will allow the engineer to go carefully over the track to form his estimates of what would make the road passable for a stock track.
