GOLF

OPENING OF TE AROHA SEASON The Te Aroha Golf Club opened for the season on Saturday. Visitors were present from Waihi, Paeroa, Morrinsville and Hamilton. Perfect weather conditions prevailed. The season was officially opened by Mr R. L. Somers for the fifteenth year of his presidency. He delivered one of his popular short speeches, and gave a warm welcome to the visitors. Mr Somers, in declaring the season open, complimented the Club upon its many years of success. This was the fifteenth year that he had occupied the position of president of the Club—right from its inception—and it was always a pleasure for him to note the progress made by the Club, together with the clean sporting activities of its members. Golf was always played in a sportsmanlike manner at Te Aroha, and in fact right through the district. The various inter-club matches had always been a pleasure to participate in. Mr Somers extended the Club’s thanks to the large number of visitors present, and concluded by wishing one and all a pleasant afternoon’s entertainment. (Applause.) The ladies’ committee, of which Mrs Bliss is the captain and Mrs Hunger secretary, quite excelled themselves in making provision for a most licious afternoon tea. The tables simply groaned under the weight of the good things provided. The decorations consisted of autumn leaves and chrysanthemums, creating a most inviting picture. A mixed foursome was played and was won by Mr Jack Somers and Mrs Maingay, with a net score of 53. Other scores were: Mr H. Laver and Mrs Seifert (Morrinsville) 55, Mr A. J. Burrows and Mrs Clifford 57.

Mr Seifert, president of the Morrinsville Club, expressed the gratitude of the visitors for the welcome that had been given them, and for the pleasant afternoon’s play, and also invited the members of the Te Aroha Club to visit Morrinsville at an early date and take part in an inter-club match.
