CEMETERY TRUSTEES

ORDINARY MEETING The ordinary meeting of the Te Aroha Cemetery Trustees was held in the Te Aroha News Office on Wednesday evening. Present: Messrs W. T. Hughes (chairman), T. Stanley, W. Mackie, A. Bossons and J. B. Johnson. An apology was received for the absence of Mr F. Wild.

The chairman reported that he and Mr Smith had engaged Mr Deed as sexton, and had also employed him to clean up the cemetery grounds. This action was approved on the motion of Messrs Stanley and Mackie.

A discussion arose over the distance the sexton lived from the town and the difficulty of notifying him promptly when burials had to take place. The matter of putting a telephone was considered and, on the motion of Mr Mackie, seconded by Mr Stanley, the chairman was asked to go into the question of cost and report at next meeting.

The chairman reported that the members who visited the cemetery on April 16th had decided to have the trees on the south side of the main drive removed, and their action was approved on the motion of Messrs Mackie and Bossons.

Mr Stanley said that several people had complained about the pump being out of repair and their inability to get water, and the chairman replied that he had instructed the sexton to make a small concrete trough under the pump which would get over the trouble.

A discussion took place on the inferior workmanship shown in placing the inscription on the headstone over the grave of the late Sir William Herries, and the secretary was instructed to write to Mr Hannah (Auckland) on the matter, also informing him that the Te Aroha cemetery trustees desired that a wall or kerb be placed around the grave in compliance with the by-laws. Accounts totalling £l2 7/- were passed for payment. The secretary reported a credit balance at the bank of £33 2/5.
