MONTHLY MEETING At the ordinary meeting of the Piako County Council, held at Te Aroha on Monday afternoon, the chairman (Mr F. W. Walters) presided. Present also were Mesrs W. C. Kennedy, E. R. Whitechurch, W. Stark, W. R. Lawry, W. McLean, and F. E. Hughes. LIABILITY FOR DAMAGES The Thames Valley Electric Power Board wrote that it would not acknowledge any liability for the damage to the culvert at the corner of Bowler’s and Ngutumanga roads. Cr Kennedy moved that the matter be left in the hands of the Chairman and riding member to deal tvith. “There is no doubt but that the river did cause a- blockage of the water.” WATER PIPE WANTED Mr W. Findlay, writing on behalf of Mr W. G. Stead, asked for permission to put a water pipe under the Tahuna road at the Te Mimi estate. The Council had no objection, and the clerk was instructed to advise the writer that the foreman would lay the pipe and only the actual time he is engaged in the work will be charged for. CHEQUE FOR RATES

From Kereone, Ltd., re Rates — “Herewith please find cheque value £l5B 8/- in payment of rates. Cr. McLeam has promised that your Council will repair the short hill at the.western corner of our property, which has been impassable for some months, on receipt of rates.” The Council decided to do the work requested. FREIGHT ON BITUMEN , The Council decided to support the following resolution passed with regard to the freight on bitumen: “That the Minister of Railways be asked to revise present excessive freight charged on bitumen, and grant a considerable reduction on consignments to local bodies for road-making purposes; aud that neighbouring local bodies be written to asking for their support.” A REQUEST Mr R. H. Haycock, secretary of the Tauhei school committee, wrote stating that the school committee was anxious to know when permission would be given to enable carting of timber for the school to be done from Morrinsville. The contract for additions and alterations was let some considerable time ago, and as the hall was in the meantime being used for school purposes at great inconvenience to the staff the committee was naturally anxious to see the work commenced. During the past fortnight the road had been in a dry condition, and it was suggested that permission could now be given for % carting. The matter was left in the hands of the engineer to give the necessary authority. CONTRACTOR UNDERPAID ■ Messrs Brenan and Coy., Paeroa, wrote stating that they had been underpaid for a certain contract and that efforts to secure a settlement with the engineer had been resultless. —Attended to. TAHUNA FENCING Mr M. Solley, Tahuna, asked when the Council will commence fencing the new road to run through his property at Tahuna, as he was anxious to get along with the spring sowing. The Council is awaiting the necessary authority from the Hauraki Plains County Council. SCOTCHMAN’S VALLEY ROAD “This Board is leasing part of Mr C. Shaw’s property on the Scotchman Valley Road and within your area with the intention of collecting stone therefrom. / In order to give access for heavy traffic, this Board proposes to make up and metal a track from the centre of your road down the side road and to the gateway in Shaw’s road fence bounding the flat paddock adjoining the creek (on right) going from Tauwhare and where the side road clips down to the left from the

metalled carriage-way. There is a pipe culvert just before the dip and my Board propose to widen this. Will you kindly let me know promptly if your Council will agree to the proposed work being done at the expense of this Board,” wrote the Tamahcre Road Board. Left to the engineer and Cr. Lowry to meet the Tamahere Road Board with regard to the matter and to have power to act.
