ENGINEER’S REPORT The engineer, Mr W. J. Gibbs, reported to the Piako County Council on Monday as follows: Main Road, Motumaoho—A contract for metalling has been let, and preparations are being made to erect a small crusher and bins in Hinton’s pit. I have made arrangements for the electrical power to be supplied as quickly as possible. Kurunui Road—Arrangements can now be made for the supply of metal as soon as the money is available.

Tahuna Road, Mangateparu Section —The formation of this road is now being pushed on, and will be ready in a fortnight for metal carting to commence. Tenders are being called for the metalling of this section, together with three other sections.

Tauhei Road is being graded up for its full length to the County Boundary, and the work is now nearing completion. Diagonal Swamp Road and Hangawera Road will also be graded up. Starkey’s Road Metalling is progressing satisfactorily, and the work being pushed on with.

Kiwitahi-Morrinsville Road—That portion between the Kiwitahi Hall and Bell’s Road requires metalling urgently before the season is over.

Roache’s Road—The widening of this road should be put in hand Us soon as possible, so that that 'portion* of the work may be completed before the winter.

Walton Roads Loan—The metalling of these roads is progressing slowly, and .1 mile 6 chains have been completed. If satisfactory arrangements could be made with the Public Works Department that section of road from Walton station to , the Waitoa River could be metalled.

Walton-Kiwitahi Road Metalling, also Piako Valley Road and Hutchinson’s Road Metalling could be commenced if moneys are made available in time. Authority is urgently required for the metalling of road through Wairere Settlement. Alexander Road Metalling is progressing slowly; sufficient work is now completed to lift this year’s subsidy.

Waghorn’s Road Bridge is practically completed, and metalling is proceeding as fast as possible. Work should now be concentrated on this road to lift the subsidy this season. Gordon Crusher—This crusher has been held up owing to some parts of elevator being repaired. Manawaru Riding Roads have been ploughed ready for grading. Another grading outfit is urgently required to cope with all the work to be done this season.

Waiorongomai-Maungakawa metalling—l have commenced this work as it was near to the quarry and some of the trucks were under repairs. Mikkelsen’s Road Metalling—This work should be commenced as soon as moneys are made available. Stanley Road Concreting—The contract has been let and work is now in hand.

Bowler’s Road Formation and Metalling—This work is now satisfactorily completed. Ngutumunga Road Metalling—This road requires grading before further work in metalling is precceded with. No. 8 Road Metalling is proceeding slowly, about half the work being now completed. Maukoro Deviation—This work is urgent. I have now waited for nearly four months for the Legislation of this road, and it is not completed yet. It will be almost impossible to lift the £ISOO by March 31st. The position is very unsatisfactory. Mangawhara Road Formation and Metalling—This work is now set out and being forwarded to the Public Works Department for approval.

Tahune-Ohinewai Road Forma m —The contract for this work is proceeding slowly. A fresh engineering survey is now required to complete this road. Tahuna-Ohinewai Road Formation quarry is becoming costly to win, and not in sufficient quantity or quality to warrant going further with, A fresh pit must be opened up at once.
