SUMMERTIME SCHOOLS

“HALF DAYS” IN FEBRUARY DECISION OF THE BOARD The question of “short days” in February was the subject of several letters received by the, Education Board'on Wednesday, the Board deciding, after a long discussion, that the matter of closing the schools on hot afternoons should be left, as at present, to the discretion of headmasters and chairmen of committees.

The secretary, Mr E. C. Purdie, said the law demanded that school be held on 400 half-days in the year. There would be 410 working halfdays left under the new holiday schedule, of which committees plight use six for their own purposes; the other remaining four would be absorbed by public holidays, leaving no “short days” available for February. The new regulation with regard to the number of half-holidays will not apply this year, as the Auckland primary schools will re-open a week earlier than provided under the new schedule, but headmasters and committees are to be informed that the number of half-days on which the schools may be closed will be limited to ten when the new arrangement comes into force.
