MAKE WAR ON WAR

ANATOLE FRANCE’S APPEAL TO WOMEN Mrs S. Harwood, M.A., assistant president of the Peace Society (New South Wales branch), enclosing a message from the “Bulletin of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom,” at Geneva, says:— “The enclosed appeal to women from M. Anatole France reached me yesterday from Geneva, and I should feel grateful if you would publish it, so that the public here might learn the attitude and views of at least one distinguished Frenchman. “The German bogey is now laid, pro tern, at least, but we seem never, never to get away from a bogey of some kind. Fear is at the bottom of it all. France fears Germany to-day, and. consequently, makes Britain feqv ho jV , with the result that the cry ic ‘Peace, peace, when there is no peace.’ “While we have so many distinguished strangers within our gates, all intensely and scientifically interested in'the great Pacific problems, let us preach love which casteth out fear, and support M. Anatole France in his appeal to the American women, and to all the world, for ‘no more war’.” ' v The “Goodwill” delegation of American women, which has been touring the French battlefields under the auspices of the American Committee for Devastated France, was received by Anatole France just prior to their sailing. He gave the following striking message to the women of America: — “You come from a country that is toiling and rich into a land depressed by disastrous and which suffers more cruelly in that her pride does not permit her to avow it. You come to participate in rebuilding our destroyed provinces. Your ardent zeal accomplishes miracles. You are vwelcome. “But the reparation of war’s ruin is not everything. You are women, and women are more courageous than men. Save humanity. It is for you to attack the monster that devours, for yhu to make war on war—war to death.

“Hate war with a hatred inextinguishable. Hate it in contemplation of its crimes. Hate it in witnessing its ornaments of triumph—with the palms of victory. That your hatred should be mortal. Kill it.

“Oh, women! Oh, mothers! Our grandchildren Will see the United States of Europe. They will see the universal republic. You women of great heart go into the world animated with these sentiments, and you will save Europe, and you will bring happiness to earth.”
